Hong Kong Tour Tips

Our Hong Kong/Macau/China vacation was real fun.  Here are some things I discovered while in Hong Kong.

1.  When buying some groceries from 7/11, bring your own plastic bag if you have one in your hotel.  They charge 50 centavos for the bag!

2.  When eating at the restaurants around 'Ladies Market' bring your own tissue.  They charge HK$3.00 for the tissue!

3.  Check if your hotel provide free shuttle service.  We stayed at Metropark Kowloon Hotel which provided free shuttle service every 30 minutes from hotel to Mongkong Station to Tsim Sha Tsui (Avenue of Stars).

4.  Taxi is expensive in Hong Kong.  They have a flagged down rate of HK$18.  From Peak Tram to Metropark Kowloon Hotel we had to pay HK$178.00 for the taxi fare because we went through the toll highway. Whew!

5.  If you can, bring a liter of mineral water.  A 500ml bottle in HK is worth around HK$10.00.

6.  Learn how to say spoon (chi) and fork (dāochā) in Chinese.

7.  Most of them don't speak in English so it is best if you learn to say 'Is there a discount?' in Chinese.

8.  Another important word to learn in Chinese is 'extra rice' (baifan) or fried rice (chaofan).  We had a tough time demonstrating this one.
